Review of 'The Cursed' (2021)

The Cursed (2021) is a decent creature feature. I like its take on a very common horror monster. It reminds me a bit of >!The Brotherhood of the Wolf!< but not sleazy/horny/weird. It's a period piece, set sometime in the late 1800s France. The whole thing starts because some landgrabbing bastards decides to do some more landgrabbing instead of talking it out with some group of people. The characters all talk in English, a narrative convention taken up in order to surmount the language issue ASAP. Plot is pretty much simple, so it is up to characters and setting to really make the film shine. The setting is good - great shots of the countryside, period appropriate costume and interior design of houses. I especially liked the mansion. Very Gothic, or I don't know the exact style exactly, but the house conveys this feeling of simple elegance yet great prosperity. The characters are pretty okay. The main guy is serious, brooding, dependable. Basically that's what this film is - dependable. Nothing too bombastic and new, but gets the job done.
